* William Dodd is a character from the novel 'Sharpe's Triumph' and 'Sharpe's Fortress'.
* Sergeant Bickerstaff is a creation based on the character of Mary Bickerstaff in the novel 'Sharpe's Tiger'. Mary is a half Indian, half white woman that is the love interest for Sharpe. She eventually marries a wealthy Indian noble at the end of the novel.
* The character of Mohan Singh is based on the recurring character of Syud Sevajee in the Indian novels (except for the first one). He plays a similar kind of character, but with a much more personal vendetta than is displayed in the movie.
